BRUSSELS/SARAJEVO, June 11 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina made an important step forward on its path to European Union membership with the signing of a key agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH, Luigi Soreca, stated today.
Chair of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Borjana Krišto, and European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, signed an agreement on Frontex.
''This agreement will allow Frontex to deploy officers in Bosnia and Herzegovina with executive powers to support the BiH’s authorities in their border management operations, said Soreca in his post.
He explained that this means more personnel for border surveillance operations, access to different technical tools and systems, more efficient data and information exchange, and greater access to EU practical hands-on expertise.
Soreca stressed that more effective border management is in the interests of all countries in Europe and that today’s step has a special significance because it comes at a time when BiH has plunged into a deep political crisis that, regrettably, has all but stopped progress on EU integration.
''BiH has the capacity to move forward when there is sufficient political will to do so. I am looking forward to seeing the same political will being replicated for the few remaining steps that BiH needs to take before the first Intergovernmental Conference that would officially open EU accession negotiations. The time to act is now,'' stated Soreca.
