SARAJEVO, April 6 (FENA) - Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fadil Novalić, the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Nihad Uk, and the President of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Halil Lagumdžija, signed today in Sarajevo the Memorandum of Understanding on the reconstruction of the part of the building where the Correctional Facility is located in Sarajevo (Miljacka building) for the expansion of the Cantonal and Municipal Court in Sarajevo.
The document specifies the cooperation of the FBiH and cantonal governments, and the HJPC of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on improving the penitentiary system in the Federation of BiH. It is about securing the conditions for the implementation of the construction projects of the new Miljacka Prison in the Igman - Blažuj location and improving the working conditions of the Cantonal and Municipal Court in Sarajevo through the reconstruction of the Palace of Justice building in Sarajevo, announced the Press Service of the Sarajevo Canton.
This confirmed the joint determination that the construction and reconstruction of the buildings of judicial institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the strategic priorities.
The Memorandum defines that the Government of the Federation of BiH, after the relocation of detainees and prisoners from the Correctional Facility, located in the part of the building in Branilaca Sarajevo Street, will hand over these premises to the Cantonal and Municipal Court in Sarajevo by July 1, 2023. They will be adapted and reconstructed to the needs of the cantonal and municipal courts.
The FBiH Government will provide funds in the budget for the construction and equipping of the new Penitentiary Complex in the Igman - Blažuj location, and obtain a use permit upon completion of construction. It was also specified that the FBiH Government would provide funds for the temporary relocation of all detainees and prisoners to other penitentiary institutions in FBiH, as well as the administration of the Correctional Facility to another location until the construction of the new Complex is completed.
It will also provide funds for the work of the FBiH Judicial Police on the activities of this relocation, as well as all other activities that will be necessary to carry out during the reconstruction and adaptation of part of the Palace of Justice building.
The Sarajevo Canton Government, as stated in the Memorandum, is tasked to provide funds for the purchase and furnishing of the building with office furniture and ICT equipment, as well as for the ongoing maintenance of the reconstructed building, including the premises at the disposal of the Judicial Police, upon completion of the works.
The HJPCBiH will coordinate the activities of the signatory countries involved in implementing this project, as well as all activities on behalf of the courts.
